What a word cloud is good for
A word cloud shows the most frequent words in a text, with larger words appearing more often. It is a quick way to get a first look at open-ended survey responses, interview transcripts, focus group notes, social media comments or reports. It works best as an exploratory and communication tool rather than a final analysis.
How to get a useful word cloud
- Remove stop words: words like the, and and was dominate every text, so keep this option on.
- Set a minimum word length: a length of 4 or more removes short filler words.
- Clean the text: remove names, interviewer prompts and speaker labels first, or they will appear as large words.
- Limit the word count: 50 to 100 words is easier to read than 200.
Limits to keep in mind
A word cloud counts single words and ignores context. The word good in not good counts as good. Use it to spot patterns and then confirm them with the keyword in context viewer, the word frequency counter or a proper coding of themes.
Privacy
The cloud is drawn in your browser. Your text is never uploaded, which makes the tool suitable for sensitive interview material.

Can I download the word cloud?
Yes. Click the Download PNG button under the form to save the image, and use it in reports or presentations.
Does it work for languages other than English?
Words in any language that uses the Latin alphabet are counted. The built-in stop word list is English, so switch it off or clean the text for other languages.
Why are some obvious words missing?
Words shorter than the minimum length, and common stop words, are hidden. Lower the minimum length or turn off stop word removal to see them.
Is a word cloud enough for qualitative analysis?
No. It is a starting point. Rigorous qualitative analysis needs coding and theme development, which our team can support.
